What Are the Basic Components of Access Control?

The components of access control are many and varied. These systems can include physical barriers, card readers, Keypads, and Master stations. Physical Barriers

Physical barriers in access control are a common method of protecting buildings and sensitive areas. These barriers can be stationary or dynamic and configured to meet various requirements. The goal of the barrier is to deter people from entering and exiting the building. In some cases, they are used to protect a single room, while in other cases, they are placed in a larger area to control access.

Physical barriers deter unwanted entry and require an identifying credential from a person seeking access. These credentials are usually in the form of a fob, key card, or another physical item. These devices may also be automated or use PIN codes.

Keypads

A keypad is a component of an access control system that only authorized employees can access. These devices may be standalone or integrated with other systems. These devices are relatively easy to install and often function as backup systems for more sophisticated systems. However, they could be more secure and are best suited for installations that don’t require a lot of security.

Most keypads are designed to control access for registered tenants and staff. However, many tenants also need to allow visitors to enter. For this purpose, using a virtual key system is the easiest way to control visitor access with a keypad. This system sends a virtual key code to visitors before they arrive. These visitors can then enter the code to gain access to the facility.

Card Readers

Card readers are one of the key components of an access control system. They can make or break an access control system, so they should be installed correctly and with the appropriate level of security. They should also be reliable and easy to use. Ideally, a card reader will only prevent or deny access when the cardholder does not have permission to enter a facility.

A card reader works by electronically reading the card. There are many card readers, including proximity card readers and insertion card readers. The latter requires the card to be held within three to six inches of the reader. These readers usually mount on the exterior of a door. They may also be used in conjunction with keypads. Card readers are sometimes unnecessary, so an access control system can also use keypads.

Master Station

An intercom system has several benefits over a conventional master station. It can be implemented using a touch screen with many voice-communication buttons. It also supports up to eight inside stations and four-door stations. There are also hand-free intercom systems available. Depending on your requirements, you can choose between a system with multiple doors and substations or a combination of both.

A Master Station is the central control station for a multi-substation access control system. It controls intercom functions and typically has an amplifier and volume control. A Sub-Station is equipped with a speaker and a call button. When a visitor presses a call button on the Sub-Station, the Master Station will ring, and an indicator light will illuminate. This allows the receptionist to press the station selector switch and begin conversing with the visitor.

Fire Alarms

Access control and fire alarm systems have several components, including detectors and announcing appliances. These alert occupants of a potential fire and are available in different forms. Some have a loud siren or chime, while others use a strobe light to alert people of a pending evacuation. In both cases, a loud siren or chime is an excellent way to get people’s attention and get them out of the building as soon as possible. Strobe lights, however, alert the deaf and hard of hearing.
